Expert Interview: Sean Greenhow, Founder of GreenHow, the Top-Rated Pest Control Company in Eastern Massachusetts

Today we're joined by Sean Greenhow, Founder of GreenHow, a locally owned, family-run pest control company serving homeowners across Eastern Massachusetts. GreenHow has built its reputation on a simple belief: exceptional service begins with exceptional training. In fact, GreenHow technicians complete more certified pest management training during their first year than any other independently owned pest control company in Massachusetts.

In an industry where many people see pest control as a commodity, Sean takes a different view. He believes protecting a home is a skilled craft that requires continuous education, careful observation, and an understanding that every property presents unique challenges.

What Separates Craftsmanship from Simply Completing the Job?

Many homeowners see pest control as a service they only need when something goes wrong. You've often described it as a skilled craft. What separates true craftsmanship from simply completing the job?

Sean Greenhow: The biggest difference is that craftsmanship is about solving the underlying problem, not just addressing what you can see today. Anyone can eliminate visible pests, but experienced professionals are trained to understand why those pests appeared in the first place and how to prevent them from returning.

At GreenHow, we invest heavily in education because every home is different. Construction methods, moisture conditions, landscaping, seasonal changes, and even neighboring properties all influence pest activity. The more knowledge a technician has, the more accurately they can diagnose the situation instead of relying on a one-size-fits-all treatment.

Like any skilled trade, the quality of the work depends on the person performing it. That's why we believe training isn't an expense, but the foundation of better outcomes for homeowners.

Beyond Price: What Homeowners Should Really Evaluate

Homeowners often compare providers based primarily on price. What do you think people should evaluate instead when choosing a pest management company?

Sean Greenhow: Price matters, but it shouldn't be the only factor because the lowest estimate doesn't always represent the lowest long-term cost. I encourage homeowners to look at how a company trains its technicians, how inspections are performed, whether recommendations are explained clearly, and whether the provider focuses on prevention as much as treatment. Those are usually much stronger indicators of quality than price alone.

One red flag is when someone recommends the exact same treatment before they've thoroughly inspected the property. Pest management should begin with understanding the home's unique conditions, not with selling a standard package.

How the Industry Has Evolved

Every skilled profession evolves over time. How has pest management changed since you founded GreenHow, and why is continuing education more important than ever?

Sean Greenhow: The industry has changed tremendously. We understand pest biology better than we did years ago, treatment methods have become more targeted, and homeowners rightly expect solutions that are effective while minimizing unnecessary product use. That means technicians can't rely solely on what they learned when they first entered the field. They need ongoing education because regulations change, products evolve, and new research continually improves best practices. That's one of the reasons we've made training such a central part of our company culture.

Why Prevention Matters Most

Preventative maintenance often isn't appreciated until something goes wrong. Why do you believe prevention is such an important part of protecting a home?

Sean Greenhow: The best service is often the problem that never happens. Many pest issues develop gradually. Small entry points, excess moisture, or changes around a property can create ideal conditions long before homeowners notice any activity. By identifying those risks early, we can often prevent much larger – and more expensive – problems later.

What Will Define the Best Pest Management Companies Ahead

Looking ahead, what do you think will define the best pest management companies over the next decade?

Sean Greenhow: I believe the companies that stand out will be the ones that continue investing in people rather than simply expanding services. Technology will certainly improve inspections and diagnostics, but good decisions still depend on knowledgeable professionals who understand both the science and the practical realities of working in someone's home.

For homeowners, that means choosing companies that value education, transparency, and long-term relationships over quick transactions. Those qualities are difficult to measure on a price sheet, but they're often what determines whether a service provider consistently delivers lasting results.
